HISTORY
Qaṣīdah al-Burdah is an ode of praise for the Holy Prophet Muhammad
(Sallallaaho Alyhi waSallam) composed by the eminent Sufi, Imam
al-Busiri (Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. Ḥammād b. Muḥsin b. Abū Surūr b. Ḥibbān
b. ʿAbdullah b. Mallak al-Sanhajī) of Egypt. The poem, whose actual
title is al-Kawākib ad-Durrīya fī Madḥ Khayr al-Barīya ("Celestial
Lights in Praise of the Best of Creation"), is famous mainly in
the Sunni Muslim world. It is entirely in praise of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaaho Alyhi wa Sallam), who cured the poet of paralysis by appearing to him in a dream and wrapping him in a Holy Mantle or Scarf (Burdah) which was present even after dream.
The Burdah, or the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaaho Alyhi waSallam) Mantle or Cloak, is a qasidah composed by Imam Sharafuddin Muhammad Al-Busiri, may Allah have mercy on him. Imam Busiri was born in Egypt in 608 A.H. and died in 695 A.H. (corresponding to 1212 C.E to 1296 C.E.).
Imam Busiri composed the qasidah after suffering from a stroke which left him partially paralysed. He prayed to Allah for a cure then fell asleep. In a dream, he saw himself reciting the qasida to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaaho Alyhi waSallam) , upon him be peace and blessings, who then touched the paralysed part of his body and threw his mantle or Burda over him. On awakening, he discovered he had been cured of his paralysis.
The verses of The Burdah have since been learned by heart and inscribed on the walls of mosques and madrassas all over the Muslim world, and it is congregationally recited all over the world.
More than 90 commentaries have been written on this qasida, and it has been translated in Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Berber, Punjabi, French, and German, to name but a few languages.

Mawla ya salli wa sallim dayeman abadan
Ala habibika Khayril Khalqi kullihimi
(Oh my Master, send Your salutations and blessings eternally
Upon Your Beloved the best of creation)
Muhammadun Sayyidul Kawnayni wath-thaqalain
(Muhammad is the leader [as the Final Prophet and the best of creations]
Of the two worlds, and of Men and Jinn)
Wal fareeqaini min urbin wa min ajami
(Leader also of the Arabs and the non-Arabs and their kin)
Huwal Habibullazi turja shafa-athuhu
(Beloved by Allah is he, upon whose pleading we depend)
Likulli hawlin min al-ahwali muq-thahami
(From the terrors of the Day of Judgement, which on us descend)
Thummar ridha an Abi Bakrin wa an Umarin
(Then we ask You to be pleased with Abu Bakr and 'Umar
Wa an Aliyyin wa an Uthmana zil karami
(And Ali and Uthman the generous one)
Ya Rabbi bil Mustafa balligh maqasidana
(Oh Lord, with the Chosen One, grant us our goals)
Waghfir-lana ma madha, Ya wasi al karami
(And forgive us for what has already passed,
Oh Most Manificent One)
